And we'll do it for you, so you can enjoy your free time doing other things!

Aerating is Important

Of every task done to build that pristine lawn, one of the most important is aerating. There are two types of lawn aeration - spike aeration and core aeration, which is the more effective method. Core aeration actually removes a 1"x 2"core from your lawn, while spike aeration only punctures the soil the width of the spikes. Spike aeration does not alleviate the problem of soil compaction. Core aeration does, making it the better choice for a healthy lawn.

Aerating your lawn has several benefits. The top 4-6 inches of the soil under your lawn become compacted through the summer and winter, making it difficult for the lawn to absorb the water and nutrients it needs.

Removing cores from the lawn, allows the soil to "relax" and bring the compaction level of your soil down. To help you visualize this, imagine having a jar packed full of pencils, packed so that nothing can penetrate through the top. Remove some of the pencils, and space opens up among them, making it much easier to penetrate the top. That's the principal of core aeration.

In addition, when the tines of the aerator remove the cores from the lawn, they sever the roots of the grass. This, in turn, stimulates your grass to produce new shoots and roots to fill in the holes. And that increases the density of your lawn.

Other benefits of aerating your lawn:

  1. Organic fertilizers and nutrients get access to the root system
  2. Water is able to better soak the soil and reach the root system
  3. Aeration helps break up thatch
